Capacity Building Programme - My Perspective on LGBTQ+ community and their social position
Planning Phase
LGBT is an initialism that stands for
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It may refer to anyone who is
non-heterosexual or non-cisgender,instead of exclusively to people who are
lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. To recognize this inclusion, a popular variant
LGBTQ adds the letter Q for those who identify as queer or are questioning
their sexuality. The topic I have selected for the capacity building programme
is "My perspective on LGBTQ community and their social position".
In a 2001 study that examined possible root causes of mental disorders in lesbian, gay and bisexual people, Cochran and psychologist Vickie M. Mays explored whether ongoing discrimination fuels anxiety, depression and other stress-related mental health problems among LGBTQ people. They experiences discriminations such as not being hired for a job or being denied a bank loan etc. There is a higher risk of suicide among youth LGBTQ community which is fueled by psycho logical stressors, including gender non-conformity, lack of support, school dropouts, family problems, homelessness, substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders. Despite recent progress in LGBTQ rights, they continue to experience high rates of loneliness and depression.
Societal attitude towards different sexuality varies greatly across different cultures and historical periods, as do attitudes towards sexual desire, activity and relationships in general. Homophobic, transphobic attitude can manifest in the form of anti LGBT discrimination, opposition to LGBT rights, anti-LGBT hate speech and violence against LGBT people. It indicates the opposition to legal right, proposed or enacted for the people. Laws that LGBT rights opponents may be opposed to include civil unions or partnerships, parenting and adoption, military services, access to sex reassignment surgery and hormone replacement therapy.
Execution Phase
Sexual orientation is an enduring
pattern of romantic or sexual attraction to persons of the opposite sex or
gender, the same sex or gender, or to gender, these attractions both sexes or
more than one gender. These attractions are generally subsumed under heterosexuality,
homo- sexuality and bisexuality, while asexuality is sometimes identified as
the fourth category. Gender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender.
It can correlate with person's assigned sex or can differ from it.
The reason I selected this topic was even if we are part of the community. is our -responsibility to make sure that that we are quality society and coexisting evolving wit or not, it every single person with have the same of life and treatment that we have. In our society there are certain rules and regulations that we blindly follow from generations. It includes the concept of stating how a person society should live and behave in a society. Since a person who belongs to the LGBTQ community do not adhere to such societal standards, they face criticism from every aspect. Anti-LGBT rhetoric comprises themes, catch phrases and slogans that have been used against homosexuality or other non-hetero sexual orientations in order to demean them. Some of them argue that homosexuality is unnatural in the sense of being absent from the nature. Others mean that the genitals were created for reproduction and are not intended to be used for purposes they deem unnatural. Some people categorises LGBTQ people as mentally ill and homosexuality as a contagious disease.
Even in the educational and
professional work fields they are denied of their opportunities for a choice
that was not theirs. They often meet with situation where they are abandoned by
their own parents, family and friends. Beyond all this, the rate of hate
happening against the members in the community is totally high. Such violence
is often associated with religious condemnation of homosexuality or
conservative social attitudes that portray homosexuality as a character flow or
as an illness.
In the Indian context constitution
allows the primary human rights which includes right the equality, right to
freedom, right against exploitation and educational & cultural rights to
every citizen however, we have not been able to implement it fully. Sexuality
is not a choice therefore difference in perspectives, interests does not have
to be viewed wrongly. Tradionalists among the world's major religions generally
disapprove of LGBTQ culture. When a religion is made primarily to bring people
together if it is creating a division among people, is it not religion that is
acting problematic here? Gender is a broad spectrum, masculine and feminine is
the two extremes of it. When a child is born, we categorize them as male or
female which is the binary gender. Apart from these all-other genders are
called non-binary. Whatever it is it depends on how a person identifies
themselves. No other person has the right to criticize or question their
choices.
The growth of a society depends on
the growth of everyone comprising the community. For a state who has acquired
literacy 100%- rate it must be reflected in its people's attitude and actions.
Even if we accept the differences among ourselves, respecting others is the
bare minimum. Changes starting are to initiate our journey towards equality.
LGBT communities may organize themselves into, or support, movements for civil
rights promoting LGBT rights in various places around the world. They are
united by a common culture and social movements. They generally come forward
celebrating pride, diversity, individuality sexuality.
Conducting further discussions in and
out of the community and making others aware of the normality of the situation
is essential to reach towards our goal: equality. As future teachers, it is
part of our jobs lo make the children understand the fluidity of gender and
love has no boundaries. I genuinely hope that the bright tomorrow where a safe
and healthy atmosphere for growth exists happen soon.
